Embedded web application for an industrial control switch

Monitoring, diagnostics, settings control and remote firmware update for an industrial control switch; TLS 1.3 and AES.

Outcome

Secure remote maintenance of field-deployed devices

Capability reference, qualitative outcome.

Pillars involved

A web application that runs on the device itself, giving control centres monitoring, diagnostics, settings control and secure remote firmware updates for an industrial control switch.

The situation

Industrial control switches are deployed in the field and stay there. Maintaining them meant getting an engineer to the device, and any remote path had to be secure enough for an industrial environment.

What we built

An embedded web application that runs on an industrial control switch. It gives control centres monitoring and diagnostics, settings control, and remote firmware update, with security designed in rather than added: TLS 1.3 for transport and AES for data, over socket communication between the device and a React interface, on Java 17.

The result

Field-deployed devices can be maintained remotely and securely. This is a capability reference with a qualitative outcome; no client metric is published.
